Google unveils new generative AI search features for doctors

Google Cloud has introduced advanced artificial intelligence-driven search capabilities aimed at aiding healthcare professionals in swiftly accessing precise clinical information from diverse medical records.

In the healthcare sector, a wealth of valuable data exists, but it often proves challenging for medical practitioners to locate due to its dispersion across multiple systems and formats. Google Cloud’s innovative search tool enables doctors to retrieve data from clinical notes, scanned documents, and electronic health records, centralizing access to this information in one place.

This enhancement is expected to ultimately save healthcare workers substantial time and effort. Lisa O’Malley, Senior Director of Product Management for Cloud AI at Google Cloud, emphasized that this streamlined approach not only reduces search time but also diminishes frustration for clinicians, ensuring they can arrive at answers more efficiently.

For example, doctors no longer need to sift through separate notes, faxes, and electronic health records to uncover a patient’s medical history. Instead, they can pose questions like, “What medications has this patient taken in the last 12 months?” and instantly access relevant information in a single location.

Google’s new search capabilities have versatile applications, such as correctly applying billing codes and determining whether patients meet the criteria for clinical trials. Importantly, the technology can provide citations and links to the original data source, sourced directly from an organization’s internal data, alleviating concerns about the AI generating inaccurate responses.

These search features are particularly valuable for healthcare workers already grappling with staffing shortages and an overwhelming volume of administrative paperwork. A 2016 study sponsored by the American Medical Association revealed that for every hour physicians spent with patients, they devoted an additional two hours to administrative tasks, with one to two extra hours of clerical work outside regular hours.

By reducing the need for clinicians to comb through additional records and databases, Google aims to ease their burden. Aashima Gupta, Global Director of Healthcare Strategy and Solutions at Google Cloud, stressed the importance of seamlessly integrating the Vertex AI Search capabilities into clinicians’ workflows without causing disruption.

Google’s offerings will be available to health and life sciences organizations through the Vertex AI Search platform, which extends the existing Healthcare API and Healthcare Data Engine products. Google Cloud has taken care to ensure that these tools align with healthcare professionals’ workflow and minimize disruption, recognizing that the healthcare industry has been cautious about embracing new technologies.

Customers can sign up for early access to Vertex AI Search for healthcare and life sciences, and Google Cloud has already conducted testing with prominent health organizations like Mayo Clinic, Hackensack Meridian Health, and Highmark Health. These organizations are cautiously evaluating the technology’s potential, starting with administrative use cases before moving into patient care.

Overall, Google Cloud’s innovative search capabilities offer significant promise in enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of healthcare operations while adhering to data privacy and security regulations like HIPAA.
