Apple released its latest iOS 17 update to the public last month, featuring numerous forward-facing additions and changes. However, the tech giant is already in the early stages of developing iOS 18 for next year, and it seems they are planning to integrate generative AI features into the platform, set to be available with iOS 18 in 2024. These features are expected to extend beyond Siri and encompass various aspects of the operating system.
The news comes from industry analyst Jeff Pu, working with the Hong Kong-based investment firm Haitong International Securities, as reported by MacRumors. Pu has received information from sources within the supply chain indicating that Apple is gearing up to introduce generative AI features when iOS 18 launches in 2024.
These generative AI features are likely to include both cloud-based and on-device capabilities, potentially utilizing the next-generation A-series chip. Among the significant enhancements, Siri is expected to be a key focal point, with improved contextual understanding and the ability to follow a series of commands based on pretext. In this context, Google is already making notable strides with AI integration in its Tensor G3 chip.
Apple is anticipated to adopt a strategy similar to ChatGPT for its virtual assistant, enabling it to perform intricate tasks in conjunction with the Shortcuts app. As per the report, generative AI will be available on iPhone and iPad models with the release of iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 in 2024. This approach means Apple will continue to roll out the technology through software updates following the initial software release.
Apple’s foray into generative AI technology for the iPhone has been the subject of speculation, although it currently lags behind Google and Microsoft, with Bard and ChatGPT making continuous advancements. Apple is expected to begin with the deployment of several hundred AI servers in 2023, with plans to further expand and incorporate them into iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 next year.
Additionally, it has been suggested by Mark Gurman that Apple is working on an internal chatbot, akin to ChatGPT, known as “Apple GPT.” The specific use cases for this technology on the iPhone and other Apple products are not yet disclosed, and more details are expected to emerge in the future.
Stay tuned for further updates on this evolving development.
